Ideas for Using the Suggested Anthems

The following anthems contain short, memorable refrains that can be incorporated into the liturgy (seasonally or monthly). A children’s choir might introduce the refrain to the congregation, and in the following weeks the refrain could be led by soloists, small groups, or other vocal ensembles from the congregation.

Prayer Response / Gospel Acclamation: “The Lord Is My Shepherd,” “Gentle Shepherd, Kind and True,” “God Is Our Refuge,” “God Walks with Me”

Call to Worship / Introit: “Come, Let Us Worship God,” “Welcome Song”

All Saints’ Day: Incorporate the refrain from “Carry the Light” as part of an extended litany or prayer, with the children’s choir leading the singing. Underscore the spoken litany/prayer with the piano accompaniment.

Thanksgiving: Use the refrain of “I Give Thanks” or “More Than Enough” (either the full refrain or a portion) in a children’s message near Thanksgiving, as the gathered children are invited to give thanks for many different blessings and share what they have with others. The refrain can be sung after each spoken blessing, or after three to five blessings if you have a large number of children.
