Congregational Song in Lent
A change in liturgical seasons creates opportunities for congregational responses unique to the season as well as experiences of ongoing liturgical moments and responses set to new and different music. Following are suggestions for use during the season of Lent:
Consider removing the Gloria Patri or other uses of a Gloria response during Lent and instead using either a Kyrie eleison or Lamb of God (Agnus Dei) text as a part of the confessional sequence.
- Kyrie GTG 576
- Kyrie GTG 577
- Lamb of God GTG 602
- Lamb of God GTG 603
Consider a sung response for use with the Prayers of the People, which may be prayed using a series of spoken intercessions or as an opening or closing response to a non-intercessory prayer.
- Give Us Light (selected verses) GTG 467
- Lord, Listen to Your Children Praying GTG 469; STF 2193
- O Lord, Hear My Prayer GTG 471; STF 2200
- Shepherd Me, O God (refrain) GTG 473; STF 2058
Consider replacing the Doxology with another response for this season, bringing the Doxology back on Easter morning.
- Take, O Take Me as I Am GTG 698
- Lord, Prepare Me GTG 701; STF 2164
- We Give Thee But Thine Own (v. 1) GTG 708; PH 428
- We Lift Our Voices GTG 710
